Influence of design in creating social impact
Design Wings organised a discussion on "How can design create social impact? Opportunities for business and society". Participants in the discussion were Viktorija Bražiūnaitė (head of the Lithuanian Social Business Association (LISVA)), Assoc. Prof. Deividas Juozulynas (Customer Experience Strategist at The Critical Agency, an expert in service design and design thinking), Deimantė Zutelienė, advisor to the Minister of Culture. The discussion was moderated by Audronė Drungilaitė, Director of the Design Innovation Centre of the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
According to D. Zutelienė, Advisor to the Minister of Culture, the project "Design Wings" shows the impact of culture and cultural industries in its small scale. First and foremost, it is an economic impact, as it creates added value for businesses, and a change in thinking, as the project addresses how to use, for example, the principles of the circular economy. She also provided statistics to support the fact that design is a more open area for youth employment: 18.3% of young people in Lithuania work in the cultural and creative industries, compared to 14% in other sectors.
V. Braziūnaitė admitted that social business companies often lack time and resources for visual communication and process design, which definitely weakens both the message and the story of the social business. The younger generation is hopeful that the potential of design to create social impact will be realised. Juozulynas identified a changing trend that emerging designers want to create something meaningful and impactful.
